Khan Academy and The Flipped Classroom

I have heard and seen a lot about Khan Academy and the flipped classroom.  I think it is an interesting idea and I do have a desire to experiment with it.  That being said, it does seem very daunting.  It would be great to have an opportunity to work with a teacher who has done a flipped classroom.  I do think it would be necessary to work with a teacher in my own content area.  I really don't think that working with a math teacher in this area is going to yield the same results as working with a fellow social studies teacher.

  1. I agree that the idea of a flipped classroom seems very overwhelming/daunting. I would definitely want to see other classrooms and how they make it work. I am a fourth grade teacher and so it would be interesting to see what or how I could make it work with a younger audience. I am wondering if it would increase understanding, motivation, parent involvement...? I have used their gmail accounts a lot this year to share documents from class (spelling lists, assignments, video clips, google presentations/notes etc...). Some of my kids actually go home and look through stuff and love it! They are very motivated when completing assignments or learning on the computer. I think I would start out with one subject and then wait awhile until it catches on and then add another and another etc... Great video! Thanks for sharing!

  2. I have many conflicting feelings about flipped classrooms...I love the idea and theory behind it. The Wall Street Journal had a great article a few months ago about low-income students having to go to McDonalds or Starbucks at night to do homework. I think I assume my students have unfettered Internet access and forget that many still do not.

  3. The flipped concept is very interesting to me. I think it has great potential if students have access to devices. In a 1 to 1 environment it could make more sense. Also, I once heard a great point about trying out the concept, they said, start small, you don't have to flip out and do everything. I thought this was a great point if someone was going to try it.
