Khan Academy and The Flipped Classroom
I have heard and seen a lot about Khan Academy and the flipped classroom. I think it is an interesting idea and I do have a desire to experiment with it. That being said, it does seem very daunting. It would be great to have an opportunity to work with a teacher who has done a flipped classroom. I do think it would be necessary to work with a teacher in my own content area. I really don't think that working with a math teacher in this area is going to yield the same results as working with a fellow social studies teacher.

I agree that the idea of a flipped classroom seems very overwhelming/daunting. I would definitely want to see other classrooms and how they make it work. I am a fourth grade teacher and so it would be interesting to see what or how I could make it work with a younger audience. I am wondering if it would increase understanding, motivation, parent involvement...? I have used their gmail accounts a lot this year to share documents from class (spelling lists, assignments, video clips, google presentations/notes etc...). Some of my kids actually go home and look through stuff and love it! They are very motivated when completing assignments or learning on the computer. I think I would start out with one subject and then wait awhile until it catches on and then add another and another etc... Great video! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI have many conflicting feelings about flipped classrooms...I love the idea and theory behind it. The Wall Street Journal had a great article a few months ago about low-income students having to go to McDonalds or Starbucks at night to do homework. I think I assume my students have unfettered Internet access and forget that many still do not.
ReplyDeleteThe flipped concept is very interesting to me. I think it has great potential if students have access to devices. In a 1 to 1 environment it could make more sense. Also, I once heard a great point about trying out the concept, they said, start small, you don't have to flip out and do everything. I thought this was a great point if someone was going to try it.
